A Washington man has been arrested after kidnapping his girlfriend and mother of his young child, and forcing her to drive with him to Las Vegas to get married.
Thomas Martin Pfeiffer faces up to five years in jail after abducting Virginia Valdez.
The incident started in Moses Lake, reported bakercityherald.com.
The 22-year-old Pfeiffer told Valdez, 23, that they were heading to Nevada to get hitched in an almost 2,000-mile, 30-hour-long round-trip.
Valdez made it clear that she did not want to make the journey, but told police that Pfeiffer refused to let her leave the car and also threatened her with a knife, according to the Baker city Herald.
The couple was travelling with their 22-month-old daughter, Ava.
Despite stopping once overnight, Valdez did not initially try to get away as she said there were too few people around and she did not feel safe.
But the following morning at the Baker Truck Corral in Baker City, Ore., she got out of the car close to some gas pumps, lay on the ground and screamed for help.
The police were subsequently called.
Pfeiffer now faces several charges including kidnapping, fourth-degree assault and unlawful use of a weapon. Kidnapping in Oregon carries a sentence of five years and 10 months.
Bail has been set at $155,500.
